Good morning girls!
I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day with your loved ones!
This month’s topic is “Fundraising.” I will be giving you a few tips that I learned at Region C’s Leadership Retreat this past summer in Forth Worth, TX.
First of all, why do we need funds?
- Sponsor events/socials
- Traveling expenses to conferences
- Recruiting members
- Fund outreach programs
Here are some ideas/suggestions on how to fundraise for your section.
Tip #1: Networking
Build relationships with companies; talk about your organization and what you do. They might ask how they can assist or participate with your section! Reach out to engineering alumni, faculty, local community, local professional section, ect.
Tip #2: SWE Information Brochure
Make an annual brochure and include information about events or programs your organization is trying to get funding for and send it to companies you have relationships with. Include your foals, types of activities you organize, and offer them the opportunity to be part of the events. You can mail them to companies, bring to engineering events, distribute at career fairs, bring to conferences, and many more ways!
Tip #3: Sell SWE Products!
Create and design your own SWE T-shirts to sell during your meetings, outreach events, and the conference boutiques! Be creative and sell something other sections haven’t made; key chains, sweaters, jackets, cardigans, v-necks, or even purses!
Tip #4: Identify Prospective Donors
Think about what companies or organizations would give large donations. This includes companies, alumni, ect.
Tip #5: Fewer but Larger Fundraisers
Instead of having many fundraisers, have fewer but better organized fundraisers. When preparing a fundraiser, analyze your benefit/cost ratio and determine whether the fundraiser is worth it.
Tip #6: Advertising your Fundraiser
Flyers, newspaper, social media, website posting, word of mouth, emailing list-serves, ect.
Tip #7: Most Importantly: Use your Resources!
Membership rebates, program development grants, local professional SWE sections, and your SWE Region!
Have a great weekend,
